zaum Literary Magazine (which like e.e. cummings' name is never capitalized) is an award winning student run magazine that runs submissions of prose, poetry, and art.
Typically, zaum features the work of college or graduate students but zaum will accept work for consideration from any student. Submitting to zaum is an easy and often rewarding experience, regardless of whether your work is chosen for publication. zaum accepts submissions from September to November, every year. Deadlines may change slightly, so it is best to submit your work as early as possible.
Submitting to zaum in Four Easy Steps
Ready your work for publication. If it's prose or poetry, read it carefully and make any necessary changes or revisions. If it is visual art, take a well lit photograph of the piece with a good quality camera (preferably digital) and upload it onto your computer.
Send an email to zaumpress@gmail.com that includes your work and a short bio. If your work is poetry or prose, include it in the body of the email or as a .rtf or .txt file. If your work is visual art, please attach it as .jpg file. If you prefer, you can also send your submissions via snail mail to zaum Literary Magazine, c/o English Department1801 East Cotati AveRohnert Park, CA 94928
Wait for a response. Depending on the editorial staff, which changes drastically from year to year, you may receive an email right away acknowledging receipt of the piece, or you may have to wait until the staff makes a final decision on whether or not to include your piece in zaum. Different years bring different workloads and different policies, so please be patient.
If your work is accepted for submission, you will receive an email informing you of such. If your work is not used in the current issue of zaum, please do not despair. zaum receives a large number of submissions every year, many of which are very high quality work. Unfortunately, there is simply not enough room to include every author or artist. Please resubmit again! Editorial tastes and vision change from year to year, as the staff does. You might consider submitting a different piece, as well.
Helpful Reminders for Submitting to Zaum
Submitting to zaum is a great way to get published, especially if you haven't been published before. zaum has no preference for or against published authors. As long as you are a student, you can submit. Of course, individual pieces should be pieces that haven't been published before.
zaum also is willing to consider pieces that are experimental as well as pieces that are more traditional. What matters most is the quality and professionalism of the piece you are submitting. So please proofread!
Depending on specific policies, sometimes there is a word limit for prose pieces or for total number of pieces submitted, but more often than not there is not a limit at all, so don't be afraid to send as many pieces as you like, or longer pieces. If ahead of time you would like to know for sure, you can submit questions to zaumpress@gmail.com.
