ED2010 has all a young magazine writer needs to get started, including mentoring, job leads and advice, a glossary, networking and salary information.

Ed2010 was started in 1998 in New York City by a group of young magazine writers and editors. It has grown to chapters in 30-plus cities and two dozen college campuses throughout the U.S., Canada and the U.K. It's the most helpful newsletter/website for young magazine writers and editors many aspiring magazine writers and editors have never heard about.

A staff of 25 volunteers at Ed Headquarters in NYC organizes panel discussions, the mentor program, special events and classes. It costs nothing to join.

There are articles of the type you would expect such as, "10 Things to Know Before You Interview" and "Can You Survive the (Hiring) Freeze, as well as interviews with magazine writers and editors, but there's much more.

Magazine Writers/Editors Salaries Given

For those wondering what freelance writing rates to charge or what others are making, there are real magazine job titles along with their perks and geographic locations published by actual editors of the publications.

Other Magazine/Editing Resources

The glossary Ed provides is an essential tool for novice magazine writers trying to find their way around job titles. The glossary takes the mystery out of the various types of work that go on around the magazine such as line editing. It explains the difference between a slug and a spec. And a new writer will want to know what the acronym "MEGO" means in case he finds it on a draft from his editor: "my eyes glaze over."

The "WhisperJobs" are from all over the country and include online writing jobs. Ed provides human resource contact information with company e-mail address formats for name magazine staff at publishers at the likes of Conde' Nast, Hearst, and Time, Inc. There are lists of mailing addresses and phone numbers for quite a few of the heavy-hitter magazine publishing companies as well.

Check out Ed's spectacular links if you don't check out anything else. There are links for "journalism junkies", references sites not easily found, a lengthy list of job hunting sites, and a long lists of links to both newspapers and magazines worth contacting.

Ed and the College Students

The college students' section offers internship listings, message boards, advice, and the opportunity to start an Ed chapter at a college as well as attend an Ed networking event. There are also local happy hours for informal networking.

Open to those who have graduated within the last 24 months, ED2010's free 60-Minute Mentors program has helped hundreds over the years. Mentors are matched up with Mentees for an hour question-and-answer session. If the student is outside of NYC, then it is done via phone or e-mail. Ed2010 is bringing college students from across the country together for a four-day conference April 2-5, 2009 in New York City. Students will attend panels and workshops on how to break into all areas of magazine publishing, how to ace an edit test and how to live in NYC for cheap.

They will have the opportunity of meeting human resource reps for the major NYC publishing houses, tour the offices of consumer magazines, and participate in one-on-one resume critique/mock interviews from magazine editors. They will be able to network with editors and Ed2010 staff. Go here to apply:
